Plant originated in Europe as a variegated G. sanguinea and was brought to the USA by Marian Oppenheimer in the 1960's. Investigation in 2004 revealed this plant is not easy to grow in Europe and has not been used in the commercial trade. Actual place of origin is unknown. Has been circulating under the invalid, unofficial name of Guzmania sanguinea var. tricolor for many years. Reg. Doc. 2/2005
