The first picture of this plant appeared in the BSI Journal 1974 page 87 as Vriesea tessellata 'Nova'. It was not until 1992 that the plant was formally described by Roeth in Die Bromelie 1/1992 as Vriesea gigantea v. seideliana under the ICBN Rules. Therefore the use of the name 'Nova' is lost in synonymy and should not be used.
