BILLBERGIA ‘Purple Haze’ <1964

A distinctive clone of distachia named by O. Ferris, Qld. AU. in 1970s. Scurfy, purplish clustering rosettes, random cream leaf spots 15cms. wide x 25cms. high, blue-tipped sepals and petals. Possibly originated from German seed raised by B. Morris, N.S,W. AU <1964. Ref: Bill. ‘Purple Haze’ article, Bromeliaceae 2009. Note added Feb 2012 Bill Morris advises that in the reference book ‘Exotica’ 4, it states under Billbergia distachia rubra, “a variety having leaves like purple haze in the sky with silver clouds shining through.” And this could well be where the words ‘Purple Haze’ were first mentioned. We must remember that the botanists did not describe a Billbergia distachia var rubra and this was yet another undescribed nurseryman’s name.
