Mature rosette to 50cms. diameter x 40cms. high in spike. Inflorescence, simple, long capitate--unlike T. xerographica. Received in a 2001 shipment of 200 small T. xerographica seedlings by the registrant's nursery Anwyl Bromeliads of Wellington, New Zealand, from Rainforest Flora in Torrance, California. Separated from the batch as different and grown on to blooming. Breeder unknown, but probably an insect or bird-pollinated. Named by Andrew Flower after a childhood hero--Luther Burbank (1849-1926), the eminent U.S. botanist, horticulturalist & early agricultural scientist who bred over 800 cultivars over his 55-year career.
